Perna gasped and struggled very briefly in the hold of the feelers, fearing that her life was in danger until she noticed that she wasn’t in pain, nor was she being taken anywhere. She watched in shock as her weapon was broken right in front of her. Her brows furrowed and her mouth hung open in disbelief of what she saw. She gave up any more struggle to leave her hold, and as she was set down and handed half her weapon, she pouted and took her half with a less than firm grip. She was given a piece of advice that she didn’t know what to do with and was told to try again. It felt nicer to hold due to its decreased length but it just made her sad, now that it wasn’t nearly as long as it had been. A weak sigh escaped her lips before she gripped it firmly once again and this time attacked Zelena in a more ideal area. Her waist closer which proved to be better suited for Perna’s height. An easier reach for the child. She wasn’t sure if the woman would even defend herself so she once again went full force with her strike, with no real plan for anything afterward. She took Zelena’s words to heart however, making sure not to trip over herself and fall onto her stick. She still couldn’t quite get a good feel for the weapon, nor proper movement, but it was already an improvement from falling over. It was a little weird that she had to focus more on her footing than actually hitting Zelena but she needed to get that and holding her weapon down before she could use it properly. Even Perna could figure out that much. This seemed more complicated than the sword she had previously possessed. The stick didn’t seem like it would really even hurt the woman, especially since now it was significantly smaller than it had been before. She’d go for a strike on her leg if she were unopposed in this matter, just trying to hit her as much as possible before the woman decided to fight back. Perna wasn’t even sure who she was, just some alien person who decided to let the kitsune practice on her. Whether or not she’d get in trouble for attacking her hadn’t crossed her mind, and when it did it was too late to stop. She was told to anyway, so once again how could she be in the wrong?

Perna took a few more moments to take in the palace before she was led away by Nia, and given a badge along with instructions to go outside. She sighed and without a word, accepting Nia’s behavior toward her, took the badge and left through the doors they came in through. She looked over the badge, not sure what it even was, nor why she actually needed it. If she could just say Nia was in there, that’d be enough right? She seems important enough to be known by name, if she’s talking to Queens. She kept the badge in her hand as she strolled away from the palace, deciding to explore the city, rather than stand outside doing nothing. She took a walk out to the third layer of the city, snooping around public areas that seemed to be places she was allowed to be. She remembered Nirvana having guards posted up in places. Either she hadn’t been paying much attention, but she didn’t find any guards around here, aside from those who were with Queen Valerna. She hadn’t kept track of the path they took from the bazaar to the palace, so she wouldn’t be able to find her way there easily. Though she did subconsciously record where she went from the palace. All these white stone buildings were a decent sight to behold, nothing compared to what she saw inside the palace though. It had been a short while since she had wandered off on her own, but it felt like just yesterday she had been doing just that. At least now she didn’t look completely dirty, thanks to daily baths prepared by Nia. She scanned the areas she strolled through, looking for more dead looking people, like what Nia had lingering around their home. Surely she wasn’t the only one with them, unless she really was just that strange, that she’d keep dead people as company. It had crossed her mind a while ago that she may just be lonely, but now with Perna around, why would she need them anymore? She stayed on that topic as she continued her walk, passing by what looked like another school. More people like Ziad surely inside, so she didn’t bother to go near it.

Perna now realized how her request seemed to Nia and she clinged tightly to her mother’s body. “No no no. Never leave Nia. I want her come too. If not stay for long time, stay for small time? But only if Nia come too. Never leave Nia. Love Nia. She my Nia. Give food, shirt, and train so I protect. Just want see your place. You not from sand place.” Just the thought of being separated from Nia made Perna’s eyes well up with tears. The little kitsune sniffled, pulling her face away from Nia’s body just enough to prevent tears to fall on her skin, instead letting them soak into her cloth. “Worth nothing with no Nia.“ She wiped her eyes and peered up at Nia, who looked visibly troubled by her words. This only furthered her grief. “I no leave Nia, never. No be sad, please...” She’d pout as she reached up to part her hair from her face. “I stay with you forever.” She smiled at her through her tears, trying to get Nia to smile as well. She grabbed her staff and gently tapped her head with it. ”Smile, smile. No be sad cause of me… Let go see other place. We get more chocolate things, and we get pretty color shirts. Get same ones, so we look same.” She bounced on her leg, trying desperately to cheer her mother up. She was still pretty adamant on leaving to see where Queen Valerna was from, but she wouldn’t be too upset if Nia didn’t want to go. Her need to be by her side far exceeded her curiosity about the Queen and her drive to grow stronger. Her last attempt to cheer her mother up was to move up and kiss her cheek, a gesture she’d witnessed not only from a mother to their child, but for some reason women to men as well. She pieced together at some point that it was a gesture of affection.

She heard the name of her treat. “Chocolate”. It was quite nice, a very addictive taste, though she feared she may not have it again, as this lady was not from this land, and she surely had never seen it in Nirvana. That taste still lingered, and she wished only for it to stay forever. It was easily the greatest flavor she’d ever experienced, dropping Nia’s cricket broth off her menu. It just couldn’t compare to the Queen’s superior treat. “Queen Samara.” Perna corrected herself quietly, resting on Nia. At this point, she no longer wished to be in the conversation. She instead closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around Nia, taking in the unfamiliar scents that wafted across her nose. With all of them mixed together, it was almost impossible to tell them all apart. She briefly caught a whiff of something horrid, possibly meat gone bad, so she buried her face further into Nia, to spare her of that scent. As the two continued to speak, Perna did her best to keep up with every topic. The one armed lady, Matsumota, had a child who commanded an army in this lady’s land? How could he have gotten there? Could she get there too? She raised her head and turned her head to Valerna with a piercing gaze. Had she not been a small child, it may just have been intimidating. She waited for the two of them to stop speaking, which took longer than she had hoped. All the while, she’d never break that stare, possibly appearing rude, but it didn’t cross her mind. She didn’t even really pay attention as she told them that Perna may one day have to take care of Nia. This whole time, that's what she thought she was doing anyway. Her need to become a better warrior was much more than just bragging to Ziad, as she had left that impression on the Queen. After getting her strength back due to Nia’s motherly nourishment, Perna wanted nothing more than to protect Nia, to care for her new guardian. It even overshadowed her drive to become one of Matsumota’s disciples. Though, once Nia had taken her in after so long of fending for herself because nobody else cared enough, she found herself questioning why she should care for those of the sand places. They clearly did not care for her, and now she’s learned that her idol’s son doesn’t even feel the need to protect them. This thought process only served as another reason to ask her next question. “You take me to your home? There way to go with you?” Perna didn’t consider until after she spoke that this may shock Nia. But even so, she did not break eye contact with the woman before her. She was intent on going with her, to have more of these chocolates. To let this woman, a Queen who seems willing, to train her and maybe even house her, since she would have nowhere to live there. Though, even if her request was accepted, she would back down if Nia chose not to go as well, or was denied permission. There was no way she would allow anyone or anything to separate her from her mother.

Perna tuned back into the conversation when she faintly heard her name again. Lady was a title? What’s a title? At least she wouldn’t be called that again after they were done here. That’s what Nia said anyway. But she didn’t explain Khalil. Valerna had addressed both of them with that name. But unlike Lady, Khalil came after her name. Was it a last name, like Tsend? Could last names change? Khalil must be Nia’s. So being taken in by her changed her name to Perna Khalil. A weird concept that took Perna’s mind for a ride before she finally mostly understood. Perna raised her head, surprised to be pulled into Nia’s chest. The little kitsune listened to Valerna’s story, and her mother figure’s reassuring words. It wasn’t often that she had been told such things. Though she was usually covered in sand, her hair a mess, and her clothes unkempt. Now that she had someone taking care of her, she was probably a lot more appealing to the eye. But she wouldn’t know. She hadn’t seen herself, so she had to go off of their word. But this story now raised a question in her head. What was a thousand? It sounded like a lot, so how could she stay alive for that long? She’d seen a few older people back where she was from, but this woman looked nothing like them. So how long do people live for? Valerna set up many more questions for Perna, none of which managed to escape her lips. But now Perna wasn’t sure of anything that she knew, as it could easily be proven wrong by just this one strange woman. She didn’t know people could even get as big as her. Then the Queen spoke of her children, and Nia told her that she was proud of the little runt. She let out a quiet sigh of content as she rested her head on Nia’s chest, moving herself into her lap. She waited to speak her mind, and after being offered the chocolate truffles, she took one with Nia and slid it in her mouth. She rubbed her tongue against it, allowing the chocolate to melt and fill her mouth with flavor. It was amazing, like nothing she ever tried before. She couldn’t have asked for anything more delicious. She took her time eating the chocolate, and once she had swallowed it all,she finally spoke. “I make sure to always stay strong, so I can protect Nia. She take care of me, I have to. But I not good enough. I need get better. So you help me when we done, Queen Valerna? Can both help me. Two helping is better than one, I think. Can be strong like one armed lady. And big red lady.” She took a moment to debate with herself whether or not she should tell Valerna. Her actions up until now proved her to be trustworthy so she filled her in. “Big red lady… Samara? She give me rock stick when I fight Jerky Boy. But he beat me, stupid boy. So I gonna beat him, and laugh in his face.”

Why did this woman keep calling her Lady Perna and Perna Khalil? She was almost certain she introduced herself as just Perna. She glanced at Valerna. She called Nia the same thing. Lady Khalil. Was this woman confused as to what their names are? “My name Perna.” She figured letting her know her name again would get her to say it right. She then turned her attention to Nia when prompted to, and she nodded. “Yes, Nia ver-” She stopped talking when she registered being called pretty. “I no pretty. Just clean now,” She said so bluntly, as though she’d grown numb to this statement. She didn’t speak anymore, as she hadn’t been spoken to again. Perna sat in silence, listening to the older women converse with each other, though she hardly understood any of it. She soon realized that Valerna wasn’t here to entertain them, so she found her own, in the form of her new skirt. She’d rub at the feathers absentmindedly, soon tuning out the other women with her. She sunk into her own little world, admiring the beauty of her new gift. It soon dawned on her that she may have to hide the skirt, since she’d never seen it around before. Was this lady even from the sand places? If not, she might get in trouble for having it. Or people might hurt her to take it and keep it for themselves. She let out a sigh and brought her legs up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them, and resting her head on her knees. This was the best way she thought of protecting her skirt. She wanted to flaunt her new clothes at the Jerky Boy, show him that she was better, and that him beating her meant nothing. But she didn’t truly believe that. Every time it came across her mind, her blood boiled, and she curled her hands into fists, squeezing them tight. She almost swung right then and there, imagining her fist connecting with his jaw. Valerna told her something along the lines of what she wanted to hear. Nuggets and wisdom. That probably meant she would train her. That got her hopes up, and even in her angered state, she’d crack a smile, her expression hidden from the others’ view. Just the thought of standing above that boy with her staff firmly planted on his temple brought about snippets of joy.

Perna kept her arms raised, keeping them and her staff out of Valerna’s way as she gifted her this new piece of clothing. She found it completely strange that what was previously on her head fit so well around her waist. So was this lady just wearing skirts on her head? So weird. She smiled though, as she too found it to be a nice addition to her attire. “Ah. Thank you, Queen Va…ler…na? It really pretty. Where you get stuff like this?” Perna shuffled over to Valerna, trying to get a look inside her ride. She didn’t want to get in without Nia, who had taken hold of the Queen’s hand, and reached out for hers now. She no longer understood the point of hand holding. Before, she felt special doing it, because she was under the assumption it was to show a mother caring for her child. But now these two were holding hands and it threw her off. She instead just hopped in, opting to ask about it later. “I dunno what blessed is. But it good? So that means I could be even better after train. Can only swing my rock stick. Not very good at it.” If this woman was as important as she seemed, she must have so much experience, so maybe she was supposed to teach her. “You teach me to use rock stick, Queen? And I get more things like this, if I good?” She’d lift a feather on her new skirt, running her thumb across it. “It look weird by self. I dress like you, so I fit in?” She set her staff by her side, and kicked her feet gently once she sat down, sticking her head out to look for the store that she may have missed that had what Valerna was wearing. She didn’t understand that Valerna wasn’t from the sandy places, and assumed she’d find her kind of clothes in this new city. “Cause Queen look very pretty. I want look pretty like that too.”
